El-Hajj Hisham Mahmoud studied theology, hadith, legal theory, jurisprudence, ethics, Qur’an recitation, and Arabic with scholars in Morocco, Mauritania, and Egypt. He taught for more than a decade at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, then left the Academy to institute Lanturna, an educational initiative that intends to establish learning collectives to carry forward the legacies of our greatest luminaries. He continues to read with scholars and students in the United States and abroad.

SĪDĪ AYOUB IKLIL · FES SINGER

Sīdī Ayoub Iklil is a traditional singer and guide for spiritual tours in Morocco, hailing from a revered lineage in Fes. His ancestral roots trace to Moulay Idrīs ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Dabbāgh. Born and raised in Fes, Sīdī Ayoub’s formative upbringing was shaped in the service of the prominent scholars and sages of the Old City.

Ayoub’s dedication to the art of singing led him to study under the tutelage of Ḥajj Mohammed Benis, with whom he mastered the noble Burdah and the Mahziyyah, both cherished poems in praise of the Prophet ﷺ.

To further enhance his musical acumen, Ayoub enrolled in the Music Institute in Fes, where he mastered various musical modes and scales, as well as the enchanting melodies of traditional Andalusian music. As time passed, Ayoub’s vocal talents flourished, and he became a sought-after singer all over Fes.

Ayoub now graces concerts, festivals, and zāwiyyahs with his soul-stirring performances. In addition to his musical endeavors, he also teaches others the art of singing in effort to preserve this cherished Moroccan tradition.

DESCRIPTION

As the Son of Mary, he brought light; as the Sun of Mary, he brought fire. Those who knew him from afar felt the warmth of his radiance, while those who knew him intimately felt the heat of his flame. He was the lamb of God, he was the lion of God. Miraculous was his arrival, miraculous his sojourn, miraculous his departure. The whole of his life was enshrouded in mystery. He renounced this life to save his people, and will denounce his people to save himself in the next life. With one hand he healed the leper, with the other he whipped the money-changer. To follow him meant to do so immediately, and his was the way of truth and life, for no man could approach God except through him. Lanturna invites you and yours to become disciples of the Messiah, the Word of God, the Spirit of God, the Messenger of God, the Prophet of God, the Son of Mary, the Beloved of Muhammad ﷺ.
