ORIENTENTIONS

Our teachers remind us to expose ourselves to the gentle breezes of our Compassionate Lord تعرضوا لنفحات الرحمن. We recommend the following to glean the greatest benefit from this program:

  1. Layered Intentions – Pen your intentions in order to best orient yourself to receive the knowledge that will be conveyed in the book and in each session.
  2. Lustration – Attend each class in a state of wuḍūʾ (ritual purity), for seeking knowledge is worship that radiates brighter when the soul is bathed in light.
  3. Devotional Practices – Throughout the program, commit to praying immediately as the time for each prayer enters, perform all your voluntary prayers, and recite Sūrat Yā Sīn by morning and Sūrat al-Mulk by evening. Perform qiyām al-layl (night vigil) at least one of those nights. And recite Sūrat al-Kahf Friday eve. These were among the consistent practices the Prophet ﷺ.
  4. Ambience – To the extent possible, set an ambience that befits hosting the greatest story ever told. You are encouraged to share your pictures to encourage others to do the same using the hashtag mentioned above.
  5. Personal Connection – Let us always remember that we are not merely studying the words of the Prophet ﷺ, rather, we seek to enter into the divine presence through those blessed words.

May Allah bless our intentions and grant us that intimacy with His Messenger ﷺ that will bring us life, love, and light in this world, and his companionship in the next. And may He bless and sanctify our beloved Prophet and his family and companions.

DESCRIPTION

O faithful! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for your predecessors, that you may protect yourselves (al-Baqarah 2:183). Indeed, the fastness of fasting is that fortified fortress for those who hold fast to faith. It is that one sacred sacrament that secures the sincerity of the seeker solely for God. It is one of five pillars upon which our faith is founded. It is the institutionalization of abstinence. It is that vow of Mary who allayed her fears with dates and water. Ramadan shall soon alight with its light, and Lanturna invites you to join El-Hajj Hisham Mahmoud and Ustādh Mohammad Elokda this year for a weekend study of Imām al-Ghazzālī’s Book of Fasting coupled with a month-long recitation of and reflection on the Book of Allah, which was revealed, recited, and reviewed in the month of Ramadan.

Last Tuesday, Apr 6, we held a special session in preparation for our retreat with El-Hajj Hisham Mahmoud: FASTING | The Pillar of Abstinence. Viewing is required, preferably before Friday, as part of the retreat.

Be sure to download Imam al-Ghazzālī’s Chapter on Fasting for your reference, al-Rātib al-Shahīr, which we shall read throughout the retreat, and the text respective to your school of thought for our special sessions on the Prophet’s Fast ﷺ. Be sure to fill out our Google Document as well.
